Artist Statement
Indian miniature technique is the backbone of my painting process. As the miniature style historically serves as a visual aid to text, my paintings illustrate a personal story.
Faux-painted frames encase my paintings. Through my research, I have found the painted borders can translate meaning beyond their intended purpose as a solely decorative element. By framing the image the borders act as a window drawing viewers into these narratives while simultaneously creating distance between this world and that of the image. The frames emphasize the feeling of isolation I intend to convey in my work.
Portraiture is the primary focus of my works and often lone figures are solemnly placed within painted frames. Even the natural subjects in my work act as characters conveying their narratives. Approaching my paintings as portraits emphasizes the vitality of the subject matter and its worth.
I have found it increasingly difficult to justify my presence and all that I consume. My work helps me navigate the contradictions of an inherent life of consumption and allows me to make peace with my existence within my natural surroundings.
