Paradigm Shift

Paradigm shift is a reflection of the Insecurities that come with confronting personal bias. Many find it difficult to admit they have such biases, let alone work towards lessening them. The arts create a space that is conducive to personal reflection but they also offer connection to others as they highlight that our deep internal conflicts might be a widely shared experience. The awareness that our deepest insecurities are shared by others allows us the confidence of working towards minimizing their effects. Empowering individuals in such a way benefits the larger collective. The arts are integral in pushing people to reflect on the things that make them uncomfortable by offering them the comfort of connection and shared experience.

PROCESS

Using Adobe Illustrate, four structural blocks were rendered. Then a laser printer and a hand saw was used to cut the shapes out of 1/4” medium density fiberboard (MDF). The pieces were then sanded before being primed with three layers of Gesso.

The pieces fit together with 1/4” notches. The structure supports itself on only four points.

Portraits are painted on both sides of the structural pieces using oil paint. All faces are done in a monochromatic palette with various shades of gray.

Repetitive shapes that mimic the structural pieces were sprayed onto the painted structure using spray paint and stencils.

Synthetic silk yarn was crocheted to create blocks of netted fabric which was nailed to the sculpture.
